University of Transport Technology Engages in Efforts to Control Air Pollution in Hanoi
On 6 January 2026, the University of Transport Technology (UTT), in collaboration with Tien Phong Newspaper, the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment, and the Hanoi Department of Construction, co-organized the scientific workshop entitled “Controlling Air Pollution in Hanoi: Challenges and Actions.”
The workshop attracted the participation of representatives from central ministries and agencies; leaders of departments and sectors of Hanoi; representatives of neighboring localities; as well as experts, scientists, research institutes, universities, enterprises, and international organizations. Representing the University of Transport Technology were Assoc. Prof., Dr. Vũ Ngọc Khiêm, Party Secretary; Assoc. Prof., Dr. Nguyễn Hoàng Long, Rector; the Vice Rectors; leaders of affiliated units; and a large number of students with a strong interest in environmental issues.

The workshop was held in the context that air pollution has emerged as one of the most critical environmental challenges facing Hanoi, particularly during prolonged winter pollution episodes, posing serious impacts on public health, quality of life, and the city’s sustainable development objectives.
In his opening address, Mr. Phùng Công Sưởng, Editor-in-Chief of Tien Phong Newspaper, emphasized the urgent need to promote concrete, coordinated, and actionable measures to control air pollution, stressing the importance of translating new guidelines and policies of the Central Government and the City into effective practice.

During the workshop, discussions focused on key solution clusters, including the promotion of green transportation, development of public transport systems, and the implementation of low-emission zones. Participants also emphasized strengthening control over emission sources from construction activities, industrial production, traditional craft villages, and open burning practices. Two in-depth thematic sessions provided an academic and policy-oriented forum for exchanging experiences, initiatives, and practical solutions among policymakers, experts, and enterprises in the environmental sector.
In his remarks at the workshop, Assoc. Prof., Dr. Vũ Ngọc Khiêm, Party Secretary of the University of Transport Technology, highlighted the University’s active contributions to environmental protection and sustainable development. He noted that the University currently offers training programs in Environmental Technology and Management, along with related disciplines and specializations, thereby supplying high-quality human resources to support environmental governance, climate change adaptation, and the development of green and sustainable transportation systems.

In addition to its educational mission, the University has intensified scientific research and technology transfer activities in the environmental field, proactively proposing solutions, models, and initiatives with high practical applicability. Through close cooperation with governmental agencies, enterprises, and domestic and international partners, the University has participated in and implemented numerous environmental projects and programs, thereby affirming the role and responsibility of a higher education and research institution in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.
